Do you remember English class in primary school? I do. Write a short story with the title, “A Day in the Life of a Tennis Ball”…or a day in the life of my left sock, or begin the story with, “It was a dark and stormy night….”
…and on it goes. Those who were creative among us were able to make something somewhat less yawnworthy of the events in the life of a tennis ball, those who weren’t….well…they probably excelled in sports or mathematics or some other far more practical subject, but I was creative. Always thinking of some new idea, some new creative diversion….
I often found the story starters used quite boring….BUT since I love a challenge, I would write them down and then go home and write something on each and every one of them- because you need to work your creativity muscles a little. Do something challenging, think outside the box.
A friend once said that I could probably make something crafty from the simplest of ideas, and I told her that it was more than likely, and give me a subject, any subject, and I would do something creative with it.
She chose cabbage. Cabbage? Cabbage.
Immediately I had an image come to my mind of a cabbage green cushion with the cabbage leaves (leafs?) made of felt. A huge cabbage cushion made of felt and stuffing (stuffed cabbage haha!). Did I end up making it? No! Who needs a cabbage cushion….but it would have been an interesting novely item for someone who sews, to make.
But I still had ideas. A cabbage brooch made from polymer clay. That would be cute….except that it would probably be mistaken for a lettuce and you would never get the shopping done. Passers-by would keep asking you why you were wearing a lettuce brooch….sigh. So that one didn’t have anywhere to go either. Little cabbage shaped beads would be nice, strung on green yarn…who knows what on earth I would DO with a cabbage necklace, or where it might be worn (the local vegetarian restaurant perhaps), but I was on a roll now, so it didn’t matter.
My valiant friend was beggining to wish that she had not opened her mouth. A Cabbage notebook for a cooking friend!- you could put a cabbge on the front with either felt or a pototo stamp…and then add a carrot notebook and a radish notebook, and a potato-stamped potato notebook…
Cabbage notecards! A cabbage potholder! (who doesn’t like green- and who ever has enough potholders?). Cabbage earrings! (now wouldn’t THAT be cute! A cabbage on each of your little earlobes)…
Stop! stop! shouted my friend, running madly in the other direction. Sigh. The curse of creativity.
